US 51 Corridor Preservation and Access Management Study (DeForest to Portage)

Study completed May 2011.

Project location

US 51, County V (DeForest) in Dane County to WIS 33 (Portage) in Columbia County.

Project overview

US 51 is an important regional route that serves motorists from Illinois to northern Wisconsin, and is also designated as an alternate route for I-39/90/94 from Stoughton to Portage.

  • Access and safety study to preserve a 22 mile segment of US 51
  • Analyze current safety and operations, as well as access
    • Enable US 51 to be analyzed as one system for current and future land use, access, operational efficiency and safety
  • Recommend improvements and strategies to allow US 51 to operate efficiently and safely into the future
    • Possible improvement recommendations to focus on maximizing the existing highway’s useful life to delay the need for expansion or relocation and preserve the investment in the current roadway
